Twice as long as the first edition, this Red Book contains 160 pages.  In addition to the top Sires and Dams, we have the top 10 Breeders of 1972, an article by Connie Beckhardt “Quality Begets Quality,” a tribute to CH Kovaya’s Contessa CD ROM, and an article by Gail Sprock “What is a Futurity.”  GV Lance of Fran-Jo continues to dominate among the sires, while the top dam is CH Lorjo’s Donka, dam of GVx/MVx Cathwar’s Lisa von Rob.  Fascinating numbers:  the #7 Futurity sire had only 15 progeny shown, 9 of whom placed and two earning BOF and BIM.  The #8 sire had 46 progeny shown, of whom 7 placed and one went BIF.  More fun facts inside!

An even bigger Red Book, with 216 pages. Two years after his death, GV Lance of Fran-Jo continues to be a top producer, however #1 this year goes to CH Eko-Lan’s Paladen (a Lance grandson).  Four Lance sons also appear in the top 10 list: Harrigan, Morgan, Gilligan and Reno.  The top 10 breeders of the year are listed, and interviewed!  Hear from the icons, many of whom are no longer with us: Connie Beckhardt, Larraine Clifford, Luke Geraghty, Fran and Joan Ford among others.  How about an article: “Breeding, An Art” which appeared in Popular Dogs magazine in 1952, written by Lloyd Brackett.  This is history!!

From page 16: “The year 1974 heralds the Golden Era of Harrigan.  Documentation of the 1974 and 1975 Futurity and Maturity Regional shows facilitates an earlier prediction of the rise to fame and fortune of the beautiful Grand Victor, American and Canadian Ch. Lakeside’s Harrigan ROM.  Harrigan has generated a golden harvest of select champions; radiant in demeanor, vital in character and temperament, correct in structure and angulation, balanced and suspending in movement and undeniably elegant.”  Breeder interviews include Barbara Amidon, Gloria Birch, James Moses and Judy Teidel, who also provided a short story entitled “Determination.”  There is so much good reading in this Red Book!

From the introduction: “This is the sixth consecutive publication of the annual Tabulation of Stud Dogs and Brood Bitches, which compiles the results of nine regional Futurity/Maturity shows sponsored by the German Shepherd Dog Club of America.  The purpose of the tabulation is to collect in one convenient booklet information that may be of interest to fanciers making breeding and purchase decisions.  Man of the dogs featured in this and past Tabulations will soon be in the second, third and fourth generations of the pedigrees of tomorrow’s producers of top winning dogs.”  They were so right!  Featured dogs include Zeus of Fran-Jo, Scorpio of Shiloh Gardens, Covy’s Oregano of Tucker Hill, Langenau’s Quessa (dam of GV Watson), Doppelt-Tay’s Jessette (dam of Hawkeye and Hammer) and many, many more! There’s even an article “Shepherds of Yesteryear” by Grant Mann. 264 pages

The Red Book enters its eighth year with more photos, more content, and more history for those of us looking back from 43 years in the future.  How interesting but not surprising that the progeny earning points for their sires and dams in 1976 are now, in 1978, top producers themselves: Hawkeye, Hammer, Watson and more. The Red Book has also transitioned from analysis by the Red Book committee about each dog, to owner-provided information including a standardized questionnaire: “My dog produces or improves the following traits in his or her progeny. Please respond after each statement by using words like none, few, some, many, most.”  Each top sire and dam includes several pages of progeny photos, and frequently a photo of the sire or dam as a puppy: Zinfandel at 3 ½ months, Hammer at 13 months, Durango at 9 weeks and 9 months, Jo-San’s Charisma at 8 weeks. This is the history of our breed that exists nowhere else than our historic GSDCA Red Book!

Similar in structure to the 1978 Red Book with a ton of photos and owner-based commentary.  “To make the useful more beautiful and the beautiful more useful is the highest ideal of the breeder.  To combine properly into one harmonious whole the most useful with the most beautiful without sacrificing the ideals of either calls for the soundest science and the finest art of breeding.  Its accomplishment, therefore, is the ultimate measure of man’s mastery of the forces of nature as applied to the improvement of living things.”  This Red Book honors the memory of influential members who passed: Larraine Clifford, Eleanor Cole, Grant Mann, Burr Robins and Ruth Schriefer; followed by a Grant Mann article “Judging vs Breeding” from the June 1934 GSD Review.  Top five sires: Hawkeye, Reno, Watson, Hammer, Kane.  Top five dams: Amber’s Flair, Cobert’s Windsong, Valfor’s Ilisa v Cypress, Bihari’s Ika, Elfie of Fran-Jo.  Read all about them, and more!

The Red Book turns 10, and with growth comes change and sometimes, churn.  Register of Merit top sires and dams are now included, and there was also an effort to change the Futurity tabulations to make them less driven by Futurities, giving more emphasis to a producer’s ROM status in combination.  Therefore, as an experiment this Red Book contains top sires and dams based on both the “Old System” and the “New System.”  While this may have been a controversy 41 years ago, from our historical perspective we still get to enjoy the pictures, pedigrees, write ups and winning progeny of today’s dogs’ ancestors: Kane, Hawkeye, Chaz, Sirocco and Impulse and the beautiful bitches they were bred to.

Featuring the top 10 Living ROM sires and dams, and the top 20 sires and dams based solely on the “old” Futurity/Maturity system that we still use today 40 years later, though with some adjustments to the way points are tabulated.  Futurity wins allow us to identify the new, young potential top producers of tomorrow, while ROMs allow us to see who has fulfilled that promise and also provides an aspect of longevity. Featured sires include Aspen of Fran-Jo, Covy’s Mazarati of Tucker Hill, Karagin’s Crusader, Wellsprings Ironsides, Prime Time of Billo and Cobert’s Trollstigen at two years old.  Beautiful bitches include Lainie vom Cypress, Valmy’s Uncola, Wonderland’s Holly, Proven Hill’s Sunshine and Cobert’s Mariah of Windigail.  Tucked into the pages of the Regional Futurity winners we can find a nearly hidden gem- the first Red Book photo of BIF Sel. Ch. Stuttgart’s Sundance Kid!

Similar to the 1981 edition and at 302 pages the biggest of this group of Red Books.  Sel. Ch. Stuttgart’s Sundance Kid makes his second appearance, going BIM to propel his dam Ch. Caprice Kitty Hawk into the top 6 Futurity/Maturity dams.  Read about her and others, including Amber’s Flair, top Living ROM dam; Covy’s Rosemary of Tucker Hill, #3 ROM dam; and upcoming Futurity sires Valmy’s Coaltown; Wellspring’s Howard Johnson; Amber’s Strider of Zarzal and Covy-Tucker Hill’s Don Quixote.  Many of the names in this Red Book are behind our dogs today.  Knowledge is truly power and the history is here for the student of the breed.
